Our history in the fruit business goes back well over 100 years. Wells Orchards was founded by Louis S. Wells in 1919. His wife Miriam Roberts’ family had been farming in the area since 1858, and raising fruit commercially as early as the 1880’s. Louis, a graduate of Michigan Agricultural College, had also grown up in a farming family. He was a visionary with a good business sense, expanding the farm and guiding it through the decade of the Great Depression. He also built one of the first cold storages in the area, and stored fruit for a number of other local farmers. Alvan Wells, Louis’ son, continued the business by increasing the fruit tree acreage and expanding the wholesale and retail sales. Two controlled atmosphere rooms were added for long term apple storage. Currently Three of Alvan’s sons; Kurt, Tom, and Scott Wells, own and operate Wells Orchards with help from many other family members.
